EYP in the Netherlands

The EYP is present in the Netherlands through Stichting Europees Jeugdparlement Nederland (EYP the Netherlands), an accredited Dutch charity (ANBI). Every year, we introduce hundreds of youngsters from 70 participating Dutch high schools to the programme through Regional Selection Conferences. Enthusiastic and talented students continue to our National Selection Conference. This year, the national round was held in the Dutch parliament building in The Hague. At the national round, several are chosen to represent the Netherlands at International Conferences abroad – events like Maastricht 2021. However, regardless of being selected, all students are invited to continue in the EYP and develop themselves further. They participate and volunteer at our wide range of activities.

The organisation started its activities in 1998. Since then, from a humble number of 2 to over 100 active volunteers and over 2000 alumni, EYP The Netherlands has come a long way and ever since has been active in conducting extracurricular educational activities for high-school students.

In addition to these annual core activities, we organise training and social activities for our volunteers. We also aim to reach young people through outreach projects, by visiting school classes and providing free-of-cost workshops about debating skills, democratic processes and the functioning of the European Union.

“Inspire and empower young Europeans to become open-minded, tolerant
and active citizens”

Every few years, EYP the Netherlands organises a larger international conference, involving over 200 participants. The last international conference hosted by EYP the Netherlands was the Rotterdam International Session in 2018, which successfully engaged over 200 participants from 30+ countries.  For 9 days, participants stayed in the iconic ‘cube houses’ in the centre of Rotterdam and debated the theme ‘Discovering Global Europe.’ European Commissioner Violeta Bulc engaged in a dialogue with the participants.

EYP the Netherlands is cooperating closely with the Representation of the European Commission in The Netherlands, the Information Office of the European Parliament in The Netherlands, as well as with national, regional and local politicians and institutions. Representatives from these groups and bodies are invited to events. One of the main aims of EYP NL is to offer young Europeans a place to discuss and debate European politics. It is therefore vital for them to provide a direct link from students to decision-makers and politicians. In the past two years, the following speakers have visited the events of EYP NL and engaged in open debates:  Annemarie Penn (Mayor of Maastricht), Gerrit Zalm (former minister of finance), Ronald Plasterk (then Minister of Education), Prins Constantijn (then assistant to Commissioner Neelie Kroes) and Nout Wellink (former president of the Dutch Central Bank).
